Description: Presented is a nice pair of English sterling silver sugar tongs by Peter and Anne Bateman, part of the famous Bateman family of silversmiths in the 18th century and early 19th century. The tongs are beautifully done with bright cut floral engraving. They are monogrammed LH on the top. The tongs are hallmarked on the insides of the arms with the lion passant for sterling silver, the date letter “s” for 1793, the duty mark of King George III’s head, and a maker’s mark of PB over AB for Peter Bateman and Anne Bateman. The condition is excellent. There are no dents, no dings, no splits, no monograms, no monogram removals, no breaks, and no repairs. The tongs are 5 3/4 inches long.
