Description: 1786 Spanish Silver Portrait Half Real With Laminated Info Card 90% Silver. Nice to have the story: the silver half-real was valued at 1/16 of a Spanish 8 reales dollar, the equivalent of 6 1/4 cents in US currency. It was widely accepted as payment in the American colonies and the young United States until 1857. The "portrait" half-real, struck between 1772 and 1825 was the last Spanish colonial coin of this denomination. The front features a portrait of the Spanish king, while the back shows the Spanish royal coat of arms. According to legend, the pillars draped with ribbons on either side of the coat of arm were the inspiration ofor the US dollar sign. Card measures 9" x 4 7/8".Coin measures 1/2" in diameter.
