Description: This is a nice 1786 map of the Empire of Germany by the French Cartographer Louis Brion de la Tour. It covers all of modern day Germany, Holland, Belgium, Austria, Czech Republic, and parts of Poland, and divides the area into the 'imperial circles' devised by the Holy Roman Empire to administer, tax, and defend the Empire (covering most of what is now Central Europe). The Napoleonic Wars would, of course, dissolve the Holy Roman Empire and lead to the consolidation of Germany in 1871. The map is beautifully detailed and notes numerous towns, cities, rivers, mountains, forests, lakes and a host of additional topographical features. A beautifully engraved title cartouche adorns the top left quadrant of the map. To the left and right of the map are paste downs of French text with remarks and description of the map. Surrounding the whole is an elaborate decorative border featuring floral arrangements, surveying tools, elaborate baroque scalloping, and a winged globe. This map was issued as plate no. 32 in the most deluxe edition of Desnos’ 1786 Atlas General Methodique et Elementaire, Pour l’Etude de la Geographie et de l’Histoire Moderne. Size: Printed area measures 14.5 inches high by 20.5 inches wide. Condition: Very good. Minor toning along original centerfold. Minor spotting at places. Original platemark visible.
