Boards are heavily worn with moderate scuffing to surface of leather. Proper right bottom corner on front board is worn to the point of lacking. Other corners crushed with loss. Spine perished at tail with loss of leather. Binding exposed. Spine label in remnants. Heavy creasing to spine. All edges are heavily soiled. Worming to bottom left corner of pastedown, fly and prelims. Heavy dampness staining persists throughout at the margins. “A present to William and Almy Baldwin by his Father Benjamin Smith and Sarah Smith of Newman (?) Sept. 28 - 1823 on fly recto. “Benjamin Smith his Book {1780}” written in old hand on the top of the first contents leaf. Benjamin has also signed 205 pp. Dried plant material at 244-245 pp at gutter. Heavy toning throughout with considerable age staining. Finger-soiling present at the margins. Old hand notations and ownership on rear flyleaf. Worming present at tips of rear pastedown. Binding remains intact. Please see photos. First edition volume of sermons published by this Boston minister on the brink of the American Revolution. Andrew Eliot (1718-1778) was a prominent Boston congregational preacher and minister. He was one the few great ministers of during the American Revolution after the Siege of Boston. Eliot lived in Increase and Cotton Mather’s home and had an extensive collection of New England silver coins. Owned by Revolutionary Bunker Hill soldier, Benjamin Smith (1753-1832), Province of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. He is listed as a soldier of the Revolution from Dighton. “Tradition says he was in the Battle of Bunker Hill and that the following spring he climbed a church steeple to watch the British troops sail away” Benjamin was well off financially, according to his obituary, but received a pension for his military efforts from the the state of Massachusetts.
