A scarce and elaborate dissertation on the philosophy of David Hume by Campbell. Campbell argues for a check on superstitious delusions according to Hume’s argument for rational philosophy. 'Campbell’s first published book and a response to what he regarded as 'one of the most dangerous attacks' on religion, David Hume's 'Essay on Miracles' (1748). Hume had been shown the manuscript and raised some objections. Campbell softened the offending passages and earned the respect of his adversary. Letters from Hume to Campbell and from Reid to Hume record their mutual regard, even though they were in profound disagreement upon almost every point of philosophy' (Dictionary of Eighteenth-Century British Philosophers, Thoemmes Press, 1999). Three colonial Boston provenances! Colonial Boston provenance of Aaron Bancroft (1755-1839) an American clergyman and minuteman of the American Revolution. His father, George Bancroft, was an American historian and United States Secretary of the Navy & United States Ambassador to the United Kingdom. This book was gifted to him Jesse Putnam (1754-1837), a prominent Boston merchant and Harvard College graduate (1775). Putnam received this book by Thomas Payson (1729-1769). RAREB1766EMOS
