Description: Giovani Bernini, Artist. Print produced by James Basire in 1763. Death. Portrait of a cardinal supported by a skeleton frame. The original artwork is now in the British Museum, but in 1763 it was in a private collection, as detailed in the text at the foot of the print. James Basire has produced a very fine representation of the original, capturing the tones and shading. The print is an etching with mezzotint printed in brown ink.You can view the original drawing on the British Museum website. Bernini designed a tomb for the nun Maria Raggi in 1643, and even though that tomb is not the same as the image in this print there are similar influences. 34cm by 26cm. Printed on very thin paper. This means that there are creases, fold lines, nibbles and chips to the edges. It is not in perfect condition but it has survived quite well for such a potentially delicate item. The photos don't really show the creases, which are much more evident when the print is viewed in the flesh. It has all the hallmarks of being a very rare item. No other examples seem to be available for sale anywhere in the world. My print is not in perfect condition but the relatively low price is compensation for any issues. (LF)
