Description: A-040z FOR SALE: One (1) very rare museum quality magnificent Baroque style engraving. This magnificent, undated print, signed by the Dutch artist Frans van Bleyswyck, was engraved and published between 1745 and 1746. It hosts portrait busts of two (2) members of the Friis family: Johan and Christian Friss, chancellors of Denmark, are set on a pedestal by three putti. Sheet size: ~ 24.5 x 18 cm. Print / engraving size: ~ 16 x 10 cm. HISTORICAL CONTEXT: JOHAN FRIIS CHANCELIER (1494-1570) was a Danish statesman. He served as Chancellor under King Christian III of Denmark. He studied in Odense and in Copenhagen before completing his education in Cologne and Rome. One among the few early modern Danish noble who occupy so prominent a place in Danish history. He exercised a decisive influence in the government of the realm (as chancellor from 1532 until 1570) enduring the reign of three kings. He was one of the first of the magnates to adhere to the Protestant Reformation and its promoter King Frederick I of Denmark (1523-1533). CHRISTIAN FRIIS CHANCELIER or Christen Friis (1581-1639) was a Danish nobleman, politician, and patron of arts and science. He attended Sorø Academy. In 1610 he inherrited Borreby Castle from his paternal uncle, Johan Friis. He later also inherrited Kragerup in 1610 and purchased Lindholm manor in 1633. Chancellor of Denmark in 1616. He was an opponent of the continuation of the Kalmar War and advocated peace measures to Christian IV of Denmark. He was a patron of the astronomer Christen Sørensen Longomontanus and the historians Johannes Pontanus and Johannes Meursius, and a friend of the natural historian Ole Worm. Frans van Bleyswyck or François van Bleyswijck (1671 -1746), was an engraver from Holland. His main work was producing illustrations, including portraits, for books. In 1706 he enrolled with the Guild of Saint Luke in Leiden. The famous Leiden etcher and engraver Johannes van der Spyck was his student.
