Paolo Valcarenghi (died 1780) was an Italian physician who worked in Cremona. He was prolific in his medical writings, often based on his erudite knowledge of ancient classic medical texts in Latin and Greek. He became the primary professor of Medicine at the University of Pavia and taught at the Scuole Palatine of Milan. He was admitted as a member of numerous academic and medical societies in Italy, including the Collegi de Medici di Milano, Cremona, Ferrara and Brescia. Cremona is a city in Italy’s Lombardy region. The Stradivarius collection at the Violin Museum testifies to the city’s violin-making heritage. The Italian campaigns of the War of the Spanish Succession (1701–14), the annexation of Spanish Lombardy by the Austrians in 1713, and the War of the Polish Succession (1733–5), in which the armies of Savoy, Spain and France battled those of the Austro-Hungarian empire in an ever-widening spiral of sophisticated warfare, helped instigate contagion. The movement of foreign troops and mercenaries, combined with climatic instability, contributed to outbreaks of deadly infectious diseases and influenza in Cremona. In the years 1733 to 1738 these events must have seemed like the end of the world for the Cremonese. Title in English: Rational medicine added to the observations of the modern mind, the constitution of the epidemic of part of the year 1733, and of the entire years 1734, 1735, 1736 in the city of Cremona ... To which came a golden method, unknown to the ancients, to quickly cure tertian fevers, both intermittent / then continuous by sub-entry, very briefly illuminated by Augustine Gallarato of Florence.
