Proclaimed king in 1665 at the age of four, placed under the guardianship of his mother Marie-Anne of Austria, he was constantly governed: by his mother, then by Juan José of Austria (bastard son of Philippe IV), by his wife, Marie Louise d'Orléans, and by his ministers. The weakness of his power was the cause of the decline of the House of Habsburg in Spain.
