This third part is very scarce.ESTC citation number T136599.Collated, complete.The third volume of William Temple's popular essays.This volume includes 'On Popular Discontents', 'Of Health and Long-Life', 'Some Thoughts Upon Reviewing the Essay of Antient and Modern Learning', 'Heads, Designed for an Essay Upon the Different Conditions of Life and Fortune', and 'Heads, Designed for an Essay on Conversation'.Temple was a prominent diplomat and essayist of the seventeenth century, a leading adviser to Charles II before falling out with the King. He is remembered for many reasons, most importantly his writing on the designs of Chinese gardens, and for employing a young Jonathan Swift as his secretary. Bookplate of Jolliffe to the front paste down. CONDITION In a full panelled calf binding. Externally, generally smart. Older calf repair to the head of the spine and front joints. Faded and torn label to the spine. Light rubbing to the boards and spine, with a small patch of loss to the tail of the front board. Faint tide mark to the front board. Minor bumping to the extremities. Joints are a little cracked. Rear hinge is starting but firm. Bookplate to the front paste down. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean with the occasional handling mark. Ink note to the title page.
