Description: This is a rare 16th-17th century circular salt granite grinder featuring a sleeping fox. It weighs about 120 pounds and is made in two parts. The top part has a hole in it's centre to receive the raw salt yet while the bottom part has a spout from which to pour the grounded salt. This rare grinder originates from centre of France, the Auvergne region, and was used to avoid paying the "gabelle" tax on salt by allowing people to grind their own salt at home. Similar models are in the museum "Vallees cevenoles de Saint-Jean-du-Gard" in France.
