This is considered the most expensive, cornerstone work about architecture due to the exceptional quality and quantity of the artwork inside. Andrea Putei (Pozzo) is considered the founding father of perspective in architectural drawing. This book has served as a must have reference for architects and artist till today. Truly a masterpiece. The covers are made of polished calf leather with raised detail and golden lettering. Pages are made of handmade, watermarked paper, typical of the period. Specimens of this book are in the Paul Getti Museum, Lion library and few other major establishments but this is the only first edition currently being offered for sale. Pozzo was best known for his grandiose frescoes using illusionistic technique called quadratura, in which architecture and fancy are intermixed. His masterpiece is the nave ceiling of the Church of Sant'Ignazio in Rome. Through his techniques, he has become one of the most remarkable figures of the Baroque period. He is also noted for the architectural plans of the Ljubljana Cathedral (1700), inspired by the designs of the Jesuit churches Il Gesù and S. Ignazio in Rome. Meanwhile he continued painting frescoes and illusory domes in Turin, Mondovì, Modena, Montepulciano and Arezzo. In 1681 he was asked by Cosimo III de' Medici, Grand Duke of Tuscany to paint his self-portrait for the ducal collection (now in the Uffizi in Florence). The work was the earliest manual on perspective for artists and architects and went into many editions, even into the 19th century, and has been translated from the original Latin and Italian into numerous languages such as French, German, English and, Chinese thanks to Pozzo's Jesuit connection. This book would proudly take its place in any museum, library or private collection. Truly a collector’s item. Size: 16" x 10". For condition see photos. Scarce and highly collectable item.
