Description: Presented is a very old silver spoon made in Denmark between 1669-1731 by Danish maker Morten Jorgensen. The spoon is clearly very old, in a form typical of Continental Europe during the 1600s or 17th century. The spoon has a wide, shallow bowl and unusual, scrolled handle. The handle has a decorative ball at the tip. The back of the spoon is monogrammed with the initials SPS or JPS and MS in an ornately engraved wreath. The scroll-form in the middle of the handle has had a solder joint and is now strong. We are not sure if this is original construction or a repair. It is likely that the spoon had a different top to the handle, and the top you see now was a replacement, but I believe the top is original. The joint between the handle and bowl of the spoon has a solder repair, and it is now quite secure. The back of the handle is hallmarked twice with a heart-shaped maker's mark of a JMJ for Morten Jorgensen, who worked between 1669-1731. The back of the handle is also marked with the city mark of a crowned NE for Naestved, Denmark. The heart-shaped MF punch is double stamped above and below the NE mark, but the solder repair has obliterated half of the MF punch below the NE. The condition is good. As mentioned earlier, the spoon has had two solder repairs, one to the middle of the handle, and one where the handle meets the bowl of the spoon. They are good repairs, and the piece is stable. The engraving on the back of the spoon is worn, but still visible. There are no breaks, no splits, no dents, no monogram removals and no other repairs. The spoon measures approximately 6 3/8 inches long. The spoon weighs 1.165 ounces or 32.9 grams. Powered by SixBit's eCommerce Solution
