The first edition was published in 1614. Rebound in half vellum. With new endpapers. With an engraved, 'Minde of the Front', poem to the front of the book, a beautiful engraved title page dated 1614, a portrait illustration to the title page and six folding maps. Lacking the first map, on page 56, and the fourth map on page 218. Sir Walter Raleigh's most important and influential work. Written during his imprisonment in the Tower of London. It was originally intended to be a multi-volume set which would help educate Henry, Prince of Wales, but following the Prince's death in 1612, Raleigh had to bring the project to completion. This work details the history of the world, with a strong foundation in the Bible. Other topics listed include Ancient Greece, Alexander the Great, the Punic wars and the Macedonian Wars. Sir Walter Raleigh was an English statesman, soldier, writer and explorer from the Elizabethan era. He is best known for his leading involvement in the colonisation of North America, as well as for his praised defence against the Spanish Armada. With a chronological table of twenty-six pages to the rear of the book, followed by twenty-six pages of alphabetical tables. With an ink inscription listing the plates to the front paste-down, and another inscription to the title page. ESTC CItation No. S116304 CONDITION Rebound in half vellum. Externally, a trifle rubbed with rubbing to the extremities and marks to the boards, heavier to the rear board. Spine is darkened. Rear hinge strained but firm. Ink inscription to the front paste-down and small ink mark to the reverse of the front free endpaper. Age-toning and handling marks to the paste-downs and free endpapers. Light spotting to the rear paste-down and free endpaper. Internally, lacking two folding maps, binding slightly strained but still very firm. Age-toning throughout. Offsetting and spotting to the leafs. Handling marks and scattered spots throughout. Light offsetting towards the front of the book. The occasional closed tear or chipping throughout. Tear of about 2.5 inches to A2 of the preface. Large closed tear of about 8 inches to page 63 of the first paging. Ink marks to the title page, with the occasional ink mark throughout. Creasing to the first page of the preface. Ink splatters between pages 130 to 144 of the second paging. Age-toning, spotting and the occasional ink mark to the folding maps.
