He is also known by the Latin name Carolus Stephanus.BiographyBeginningsHe belongs to the great family of printers of the same name (third son of Henri Estienne), and was the stepson of Simon de Colines. He was brought up in the knowledge of literature and ancient languages. He worked a little in the workshop then studied medicine in Paris with Jacobus Sylvius at the same time as Vesalius.Medical careerBefore becoming a printer himself, he devoted himself to ancient languages and then to medicine, like Rabelais. Lazare Baïf entrusted him with the education of his son and, as such, took him to his embassies in Germany and Italy, so that he could continue his care for his student. In Venice, Estienne became friends with Paul Manucius, who speaks of him in some of his letters, in very honorable terms. He engaged in the publication of an illustrated anatomy with his friend Estienne de la Rivière, surgeon and engraver, who began wood engraving in 1530.In 1542, he became Doctor Regent of the Faculty of Medicine of Paris and practiced medicine until 1550. We owe him several important anatomical discoveries. In osteology, he discovered the nourishing holes of bones which he understood the physiological role. In neurology, it describes the trigeminus, the phrenic nerve and the pneumogastric sympathetic chain. He was the first, in 1539, to mention the venous valves of the liver in his book De Dissectione Partium Corporis Humani Libri Tres (which appeared in 1545); in 1751, Albrecht von Haller (1708-1777) nicknamed him "first author of valves" (primus valvularum auctor), but the veins of the liver are difficult to observe, and history will record a another name for the discovery of these valves, Girolamo Fabrizi d'Acquapendente (1537-1619).Printer activitiesIn 1550, following the flight of his brother Robert Estienne to Geneva, he must take over the management of the family printing company and signs his misfortune. Based on the manuscripts of the king's library, in 1551 he published the first edition of the Greek text by the historian Appian, in Garamond characters. Charles Estienne receives the title of king's printer, in a letter patent of February 26, 1552.Convicted in 1557 in the affair of the "King's Greeks", his property is seized several times in 1561, 1562 and 1563. He died ruined in 1564. His daughter Nicole Estienne jointly renounces with her husband Jean Liébault, to her succession.According to Michel Maittaire, the beauty of the editions published by Charles Estienne has never been surpassed: he would have equaled, in his erudition, the most learned printers, and there are few who have published more works than him in one such a short space of time.-ORIGINAL EDITION FROM THE 16TH CENTURY!!first printThis copy was offered much later as first prize in Latin Rhetoric to the student Charles Adrien Du Cauroy, in 1747 College of Dormans in Beauvais (Dormano-Bellovacum) as attested by an added (repeated) interfoliated sheet, printed and filled in in pen, with Coffin's autograph signature Text in LatinCICERO(Marcus Tullius Cicero)-106-43 BC.
