Steiner became a pastor in Oettingen, Bavaria for a number of years before moving to Augsburg in 1777 to take up the position of deacon. He later took the role of pastor of the Evangelical Lutheran congregation at the St. Ulrichkirche in 1783 and held this office until his death.
