Synonyms: Cedrus libanitica This is an evergreen conifer that, with age, develops a massive trunk, a flattened top and broad spreading horizontal branching. Lower branches typically remain on the tree as it ages, often touching the ground. It is a slow-growing tree that may reach only 20’ tall in its first 20 years. Over time, cedar of Lebanon will typically grow to 40-60’ (infrequently to 120’ or more) tall. The seed cones are produced often every second year, and mature in 12 months from pollination; mature cones in late autumn are 8–12 cm (3–4 3/4 in) long and 4–6 cm (1 1/2–2 3/8 in) wide. The needles of the Lebanon cedar look like those of the Larch, except that they are evergreen. The needles are grouped in tufts of 30-40. They are about 1/2-1 1/2 inches (1.5-3.5 cm) long, stiff, and four-sided, tapering towards their points. They are a dark blue-green color, and stay attached to the tree for 2 years.Native to mountains near the Mediterranean in Turkey, Syria and Lebanon. In Turkey, occurs from the western Taurus Mountains, east to the province of Hayat . Zone: 6 to 7 Medicinal use : The leaves and the wood are antiseptic and expectorant. They act to disinfect the respiratory tract.Edible parts : A manna is obtained from the tree. Other uses : An oil similar to turpentine is obtained from the wood. An essential oil from the wood is used in perfumery. Wood - moderately hard, durable. Used for construction. The wood is extremely durable and retains its delightful fragrance for many years .
