The Spectrum opened in September 1967 and was Philadelphia's first modern indoor sports arena. It was built to home the expansion team, Philadelphia Flyers NHL and to accommodate the existing Philadelphia 76ers NBA. The first event to be held at the Spectrum was the Quaker City Jazz Festival on September 30, 1967. The first sporting event held there was a boxing match featuring Joe Frazier vs Tony Doyle on October 17, 1967. The last public event at the Spectrum was a Pearl Jam Concert on October 31, 2009. The Spectrum held the record for the fastest conversion from Hockey to Basketball. Between the opening and closing dates, the Spectrum held endless concerts and sporting events.
