Description: John William Joseph Winkler ( 1894-1979 ) was a master etcher who was born in Austria andemigrated to the USA when he was about 17. His work has been favorably compared to Whistler's.He did non-tourist etchings of early San Francisco including Chinatown, wharves, and various neighborhoods. These prints were mostly done when he lived in El Cerrito, CA across the Bay from San Francisco. They are in a portfolio put together by Winkler to "fulfill a promise" to a friend. The cards span the years 1938 to 1969. All except 1938 are initialed "W" in the plate and all are signed in pencil on thinlaid paper, "WinklerJW". The scenes vary from religious to humorous with good ( cupids ) facing evil ( devils ). Images sizes vary : 1938 is 3" x 4 1/2", !951 is 4 3/4" x 5 3/4", 1953 is 5" x 7", etc. Matte size is 8 1/2" x 11 1/2". One card from 1960 and the one from 1963 are not in mattes. All are in excellent condition. The portfolio cover has water stains and paper losses. Total weight is 1 pound 9 ounces. Card dates : 1938, 48, 49, 51, 53, 54, 57, 60 ( 2 designs ), 62, 63, 64, 69.
