Description: Very rare vintage photograph print Photo Shows: THE AMERICAN CIVIL WAR: FORT SUMTER, BUILT IN THE HARBOR OF CHARLESTON, SOUTH CAROLINA, WAS PENTAGONAL IN SHAPE, 350 BY 300 FEET IN SIZE, WITH WALLS 40 FEET HIGH AND UP TO 12 FEET THICK. IT WAS DEFENDED BY 68 MEN COMMANDED BY MAJOR ROBERT ANDERSON. ON APRIL 6, 1861, ABRAHAM LINCOLN NOTIFIED GOVERNOR FRANCIS PICKENS OF SC. THAT AN ATTEMPT WOULD BE MADE TO SUPPLY THE FORT WITH PROVISIONS. ON APRIL 10TH, GENERAL P.G.T. BEAUREGARD WAS ORDERED TO DEMAND THE EVACUATION OF FORT SUMTER OR REDUCE IT. ANDERSON REFUSED BEAUREGARD, AND AT 4:30am THE BOMBARDMENT BEGAN. THIRTY-FOUR HOURS LATER, ANDERSON SURRENDERED (WITHOUT THE LOSS OF A SINGLE LIFE). THE TOP PHOTO SHOWS FORT SUMTER SHORTLY AFTER IT'S SURRENDER. THE BOTTOM PHOTO SHOWS WHAT WAS LEFT OF IT AFTER BOMBARDMENT BY THE UNION NAVY DURING AUGUST, 1863. Very high quality photo print.
