Description: No, these aren't actually football cards, but back in the day, fans collected these Coke caps in search of their favorites. And these are a delightful reminder of the days when the NFL was becoming America's favorite sport. This is a group of 11 1965 or later Coca-Cola caps featuring images of NFL stars including future Hall of Famers Joe Fortunato of the Bears and Paul Krause of the Redskins. Coke distributed a national set of big-name "NFL All-Stars" that was intermingled with the local set using caps featuring players on their local team. Collectors, of course, never knew what they would get until they popped the top. The caps were first issued in 1964 and continued to appear in 1965, '66 and '67. The original 1964 caps can be distinguished from the later versions because the number appearing at 9 o'clock on each cap was the pictured player's jersey number. On these caps, the caps are numbered in order and the number is prefixed with the letter "C." This lot features some outstanding players in addition to the two Hall of Famers. There are quarterbacks Frank Ryan of the Browns and Charley Johnson of the Cardinals as well at defensive backs Pat Fischer, Bobby Boyd and Terry Barr and linebacker Maxie Baughan. All 12 caps are from bottles of Coke. You can see them all in the scans. As the scans show, the caps show the expected dings. These were retrieved from actual soda bottles, so you'll find some bends and scratches. Take a look at the images and decide.
