Description: A retelling of the story of William the Conqueror - King of England. From the Dustjaket Flyleaf ....... Loud and far resounded the bray of horns, the mighty strokes of maces, the quick clashing of swords. It was 1066 in Hastings, England, and a battle had begun that would drastically alter the course of western civilization. England had lacked a strong central government for generations. Thus, when Edward the Confessor died, leaving no heir to the throne, it was small wonder that the crown of England seemed a tempting prize. Seizing the crown the very day Edward was buried, the English Earl Harold knew no peace during his short reign. Two times invaders threatened England in ten months. Then, Duke William of Normandy landed on British shores. The great battle had begun that was to remake England into a power that would dominate Europe for hundreds of years. When Edward the Confessor, King of England, died in January 1066 without an obvious heir to the throne, his death precipitated two invasions of England and a series of battles for the crown by three men: King Harold II of England, King Harold Hardrada of Norway, and Duke William of Normandy (later King William I of England). The outcome determined the course of western civilization for a thousand years to come. Interestingly enough, the final chapter of this book is called What If—? and offers a bit of alternate-history speculation. What if William had lost at Hastings? What if there had been no Norman Conquest of England? Silverberg develops a number of possibilities, picturing a world in which England remained isolationist and never went abroad to found colonies. North America would almost certainly have become a French colony, though it may have attained at least some measure of independence. It's an interesting fancy, and worth considering, since there are so many ways in which William's success rested on good luck and timing rather than strength or skill. Robert Silverberg, writing under the name Franklin Hamilton, brings alive the human participants of the conflict, making them relevant to the modern-day world. Very Interesting read!Reviewsgreat read! ... Another variation/ on a significant event in English History. Very interesting. VERY DETAILED EXAMINATION OF THIS TIME IN HISTORY … This account is a detailed examination of the exploits of Duke William of Normandy from 1066-1087. King Edward the Confessor died in 1066. His advisor of 12 years, Harold Godwin had himself crowned king claiming that Edward, on his deathbed, declared Harold to be his successor. Two other successors existed: William the Duke of Normandy to whom Edward had promised his throne and King Harold of Norway who laid claim to the English throne through King Cnut. Harold invaded first, landing along the North Sea coast in northern England. Harold force-marched his army 200 miles from southern England. In the battle that followed, Harold of Norway was slain and his army defeated. King Harold of England had only one day to let his soldiers rest before receiving word that Duke William had landed on England's southeast coast. Another forced-march brought Harold's exhausted soldiers to the southern coast. Rather than resting for a few days, Harold attacked William at Hastings. William was a military genius, a strategist, and had more men, more horses, and more modern weapons. Harold was slain and the English were defeated. William and his Norman noblemen subdued the rest of England, introducing their system of land ownership, government, and language. The author examines the progress of William's 21-year reign and his strengths and weaknesses. in the last chapter, the author plays "What If," looking at what might have happened had Harold triumphed and William lost in 1066.Marvellous Collectable UNread Copy!
