It grows to a height of 5-6 feet with closely spaced leaves. Plant form is an inverted cone. It matures in 60-65 days. It has a sweet mild flavor with a slightly nutty taste, and is an excellent cigarette or pipe tobacco. It can be used in a blend, or on its own. Costello has a nicotine content at 2.4%. The leaves air cure to a light brown to a dark reddish brown. How to Grow Tobacco Growing your own tobacco is so easy and not dissimilar to growing tomatoes. Place commercial seedling compost into a tray and soak the soil with water and allow the excess water to drain off. Sprinkle the tobacco seeds onto the surface of the damp soil. Do not cover the seeds, as they need light for germination. Tobacco seeds are very tiny, so be careful to spread the seeds as evenly as possible.
