$100 Confederate States Coupon Bond - Criswell 28, Ball 51

Description: $100 Confederate States Coupon Bond - Criswell 28, Ball 51 Offered for your consideration is a $100 coupon bond issued by the Confederate States of America to help fund the Civil War. It was catalogued by the late Grover Criswell as Cr. 28 and by the late Dr. Douglas Ball as B. 51. The central vignette features a portrait of John H. Reagan, the Postmaster General of the Confederacy throughout the war, presented in an oval frame, with floral sprays at the sides. Immediately above, printed in large letters is “CONFEDERATE STATES OF AMERICA”, while below is the statement that this bond was part of a “Loan Authorized by Act of Congress C. S. A. of Augt. 19th 1861”. The body of the bond is dominated by the financial obligation, printed in a lovely italic script. This obligation states (in part) that “On the first day of July, 1868 The Confederate States of America, will pay to the Bearer of this Bond at the Seat of Government, or such place of Deposit as may be appointed by the Secretary of the Treasury, the sum of One Hundred Dollars, with interest thereon … at the rate of Eight per cent per annum …”. It further indicates that “… This debt is authorized by an act of Congress, approved August 19, 1861, entitled, “An Act to Authorize the issue of Treasury Notes, and to provide a War tax for their redemption.””. It was signed and sealed “… at Richmond this 31 day of Mar. 1862 …” by “Ro: Tyler” in his capacity as “Register of the Treasury”. An extremely intricate rectangular border encloses all of the foregoing elements, neatly separating them from the remaining seven interest coupons. Each of these coupons was valued at “FOUR DOLLARS” and was hand signed by “R J Nelson”, one of the many employees of the treasury who signed currency or bond coupons. This bond was printed by “HOYER & LUDWIG RICHMOND VA.”, as evidenced by their imprint at the bottom center. In common with most government bonds of the era, the back of this piece is blank. Confederate records indicate that only 727 bonds of this type were originally issued. An attractive example of this early-war bond. This piece would look great framed in an office or den, especially with the intricate border providing an inner frame. Robert Tyler was the son of John Tyler, the 10th President of the United States, and served as the register of the Confederate Treasury from August 13, 1861 until the close of the war. He received his position mainly through the influence of his father and not due to any special abilities of his own. It is interesting to note that during his father’s administration, Robert spent a great deal of time in the White House, and his wife served for some time as the official hostess. The presently offered specimen exhibits signs of expected period use and subsequent storage, though this is minimal considering the size of the document and its function. Light toning is present across the entire surface, imparting to the piece an off-white to beige hue (this is slightly darker along the right hand margin). Numerous foxing spots are scattered throughout the design, more easily noticed on the blank back. Due to the acidic nature of the ink and the lower quality of the paper, some corrosion is present at all of the manuscript additions. In common with virtually all documents of this size and type, numerous storage folds and creases are noted, though none of these appear to have compromised the integrity of the paper (most of these folds occurred when the bonds were placed in safes or the cubbyholes of desks). Minor wrinkling is also noted, especially at the upper right. All of the edges are irregular and somewhat ragged, with the left edge and lower left coupon exhibiting edges that appear to have been torn by hand. Numerous small holes and weak spots are noted for accuracy, as these are really only visible when the piece is held to the light (two at the upper left are more pronounced than the remainder). This interesting piece measures approximately 10⅞ x 13¾inches, and, as previously noted, it would look great displayed in a home or office. A charge of $6.95 will be added to the winning bid for postage and insurance. A $5.00 charge will be added to any item picked up in person at our physical location.
