These plants will produce blooms in almost any type of soil, and are resistant to both drought and wet conditions as well. Mexican petunias are perennial shrubs, which can grow as tall as three feet, but in cold climates Mexican petunias can be grown as annuals that must be replanted every year. There are also some dwarf species available, which will grow only to less than one foot. With minimal care and supervision, these plants produce attractive, tubular flowers which are generally bluish or purple in color, and similar in appearance to common petunias—even though the two plants are not related. These plants are very attractive to butterflies and hummingbirds, which makes them popular choices in many yards. Care Ruellia needs a warm climate. Site in partial shade and fertile, consistently moist, but well-drained soil. Propagation - Seed or softwood cuttings in spring. Self-sows aggressively if conditions are right. How to Plant Mexican Petunia from Cuttings:Step 1: Using sharp scissors, snip off shoots from the plant, cutting at a slight angle. Make the cuttings about 4” - 8″ long, and strip the leaves from the lower third, along with any flower buds (which will pull out too much nutrition). You can also plant them without cutting the leaves (just remove the dead leaves). Step 2: Put the cuttings in a vase of water and let them sit out of direct sunlight for a few days, changing the water every couple of days and you will see the roots starting to sprout. I tried planting even without the roots and they grow just fine. You can also use rooting hormones. Step 3: Place the cuttings in rich soil, spaced a few inches apart from each other, and water well. Subsequent waterings should be done with a “fine mist” to keep the plant hydrated without disturbing the root structure. Note: Mexican petunias love sun. But although they love sun, do not expose to extreme hot sun yet when they are newly planted. Wait until they are fully established. Mexican petunias are not picky. They easily grow. The more you cut them the more they grow. I have these plants in my garden for many years and they easily grow. Hummingbirds and butterflies are my regular visitors in my garden!Happy Gardening!
