Description: – This private collection of 10 pencil signed and titled vintage American lithographs by listed artist Alice Harold Murphy [1896-1966] includes works created in the 1930s and 1940s. She is primarily known for her landscapes and figure studies – this selection of powerful fantasy, dream-like surreal images is unusual for the artist. These images are filled with allegory and mysticism – I will list them 1 thru 10 and hopefully the info lines up. - 1. THE DREAMER titled and signed in pencil “to Martha” and fully signed by the artist. This work, like all but one of the lithographs, is 12” x 16”. There is a bit of old tape randomly to the edges of this and a number of the others – it is harmless and of no concern. – 2. OF THE DEEP 12” x 16”, titled in pencil, also ED 30 and signed by the artist. – 3. THE ROCKS AND THE WANE titled in pencil, also “to Martha with love”, 12” x 16” and signed by the artist. - 4. WINDS OF HEAVEN titled and signed by the artist, this one is 10” x 14” with some upper left corner toning. - 5. FEAR a powerful image, 12” x 16”, titled and signed in pencil by the artist. - 6. UNDER THE LEAVES OF NIGHT 12” x 16” titled and signed by the artist, also “to Martha” - 7. THE SEARCH 12” x 16”, titled and signed by the artist - 8. THE SHAWL OF LIGHT 12” x 16”, titled and signed in pencil by the artist - 9. PHILOSOPHY a vertical 12” x 16” titled and signed by the artist and 10. INTERLUDE a vertical 12” x 16” with small upper left corner loss. Titled and signed by the artist, also “ to Martha with love”. This last image is the only one signed ALICE MURPHY, all the others are signed ALICE HAROLD MURPHY.
