1 Pysa 1882 African Isle of Cloves ZANZIBAR (890E)

Description: The Pysa was a Zanzibari coin that was struck in AH1299 (1882) and AH1304 (1887). The obverses of these coins have a pair of scales. The name 'Pysa' is derived from the currency units 'Pice' and 'Paisa'. The AH1299 coin was struck at the Royal Belgian Mint, Brussels, Belgium. These coins were commissioned by Sultan Barghash bin Said ibn Sultan who was, apparently and understandably, upset that his name was written incorrectly on the coins as "Sultan Said ibn Barghash ibn Sultan". It is accompanied by the expression "حفظه الله", "may Allah save him". Note that even one of the Arabic characters was incorrectly written: the "fa" in "حفظه" is written with a dot below (a Maghreb variant) rather than with the dot above as in standard Arabic script.Zanzibar is an insular semi-autonomous province which united with Tanganyika in 1964 to form the United Republic of Tanzania. It is an archipelago in the Indian Ocean. Zanzibar has been called the Isle of Cloves and the clove sprigs can be seen at different positions on the obverse and reverse.Sayyid Barghash bin Said al-Busaidi, (1836–1888), was an Omani Sultan the second Sultan of Zanzibar. Sayyid Barghash ruled Zanzibar from 7 October 1870 to 26 March 1888.OBVERSE: Arabic inscription, cloves at the top, encircled with intricate patternLettering:سلطان سعيد بن برغش بن سلطانحڢظه اللهTranslation: Sultan Sa'id ibn Barghash ibn Sultan May Allah save himDesigner: Leopold WienerREVERSE: Scales with date in between in ArabicLettering: ١٢٩٩Translation: 1299Designer: Leopold Wiener EDGE: SmoothDesigner: Leopold Wiener (Dutch born Belgian engraver and sculptor born in Holland 1823 died in Brussels 1891)Mint: Brussels, Belgium Mintage in 1882 (١٢٩٩) 4 640 000Country Zanzibar (Tanzania) Sultan Barghash bin Said (1870-1888)Type Standard circulation coinYear 1882 (1299)Calendar Islamic (Hijri)Value 1 Pysa Currency Ryal (1882-1908)Composition BronzeWeight 6.13 gDiameter 25 mmThickness 1.5 mmShape RoundOrientation Coin alignment ↑↓Demonetized YesReferences KM# 1 Track Page Views With Auctiva's Counter
